Blessings and Books: The Liberdade Library Book Drive

There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.

–Marcel Proust

Marianne and Deborah don’t like to run. I mean, they run around with the other kids, but it is not their favorite activity. They would much rather be reading in the library which is where I found them the other day. Somehow they had managed to avoid being drafted into playing tag with the other kids and, instead, were busily picking out books to read. They had a unique opportunity to choose whatever they felt like reading from the bookshelves free from the constraints of peer pressure, educational demands, and time.

Marianne (L), 9 years old, and Deborah (R), 10 years old, posing in the library.

Today, Marianne and Deborah ended up settling on a set of books about body parts. The rest of the afternoon was spent passing around these books explaining how your tongue tastes or how your foot walks. In just this quick afternoon reading session, Marianne and Deborah were exposed to important scientific concepts and gained a better understanding of the world around them.

Many of the children here love to read but do not have access to more than a few books. Books in Brazil are expensive and there are few public libraries. The collection of books at the Liberdade Shade and Fresh Water project is one of the biggest in the community. It currently consists of about 20 books for adults, 30 for teens, and about 100 books for young readers.

This is where I turn to you and ask for your help. Please help give children like Marianne and Deborah more opportunities to read by helping to expand selection in the library. The dream is to buy 60 new books spanning all the levels. One gift of just $15 will buy a new book for the Shade and Fresh Water library.

Donate on December 3, UMC #GivingTuesday  between 12:01am EST and 11:59pm EST, and your gift will be matched dollar for dollar. Meaning one gift of $15 will be matched and we will be able to buy two books! Muito legal!

To donate:

  1. On Tuesday, December 3rd, between 12:01am EST and 11:59pm EST, go to the Shade and Fresh Water page (#11580A) at
  2. Click on the big red “Donate Now” button. Fill out and submit the online gift form.
  3. Email me at ekerrcarpe[at]gmail[dot]com with your name and the amount of money given. This step is important because this information will be used to make sure your gift goes to the correct project in the Shade and Fresh Water Network.
  4. I will send you a confirmation email thanking you and letting you know your donation was received.

Together we can build God’s kingdom, right here and now, one child and one book at a time.

  1. Emma,
Can actual books be donated? Our library here at IADT may have some we could send. How could that be done?

    • Unless the books are in Portuguese, that would not be helpful. Very few people speak English here, let alone well enough to read in the language. That is why I am asking for monetary gifts, so that we can buy books in Portuguese here in Brazil.

There is one thing that your library at IADT could help with though. We need book ends. You know those industrial metal book end you see in libraries? We need those for both the library at my project and the library in another project.

  2. Hi Emma,

We will have a big promotion for your book project using your pictures and explanation from your website. The time for people to make their contribution in California would be from 9 pm 12/2 through 5 am 12/3. Do I have that right? and they can use credit cards or ATM cards, right?

Meanwhile, Pastor Romy will be returning home on 11/1, and I will check that date for your appearance in Colfax.

    • Hi Joe,

Thank you for the promotion! Your enthusiasm is infectious. You have the correct times. In California, the time for people to make their contribution is from 9pm 12/2 through 5am 12/3. However, that is only if they want to have their gift matched. They can still donate after that window but there is a chance that their gift will not be matched.

In order to donate online a person much use their credit or ATM card. (The Advance takes Visa, Mastercard, Discovery, and American Express.) The gift matching is only for online donations.

I hope this helps clear some things up. I look forward to hearing from you!
